FAQs
Where are you based?
We are based in Melbournes inner North, but the sharpenig service is mobile and we get out up to 35km from the CBD
What do you use to sharpen?
For Stainless and super steels, sharpening starts of on CBN wheels that are designed to machine hardened steel with reduced heat and friction as compared to traditional abrasives. CBN accomplishes this by acting more like a cutting action than pure abrasion, as a result the material matrix at the edge apex is less prone to stress fractures and grain tear out making it tougher and more stable.
For plain high carbon steels/high carbon cores, they’re ground on a custom built diamond flat hone, that employs water cooling and finer grit abrasions that high carbons benefit from.
Single bevel Japanese style knives are started on the diamond flat hone and finished on a combination of synthetic whetstones for that mirror finish and super delicate slicing edge.
Garden tools are addressed on a combination of equipment including a slow speed belt grinder using advanced trizact abrasives to maintain the integirty of the edge without making too much fuss in the sharpening process.
Scissors are sharpened on a custom built flat hone using 3M Cubitron sheets, Micromesh pads, rock hard felt and the Katoku edge guide system.
Do you have a minimum for callout?
I require 5 tools as a minimum for free callout otherwise a $15 fee applies
My Knife is chipped/rusty/damaged, can you repair?
Absolutely, depending on the work required I may have to take it with me and work on it in my workshop where i can more delicately control the temperature and integrity of the steel, but pretty much any repair work is possible. Reach out to discuss now.
How do I know you’ll do a good job? I’ve used mobile sharpeners in the past and have been disappointed with the results…
I understand that reaching out can be hard, especially when you have bad experiences… I’ve received many a call and inquiry that starts exactly like that question… my response… I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience, I can only guarantee to do what I’ve always done, use my knowledge and equipment to sharpen. As for how you know, you can read the reviews and take a leap. But if you have questions that will make you feel more comfortable, please feel free to ask.
